EMS Earns Grant for Grand Central Station
Congratulations to Rebecca Huff and the GCS Committee on being awarded a $5,000 Center for Learning & Development grant to implement a new program, known as "Grand Central Station." Twenty-one Regions VII schools applied for the grant and Elkhart Middle School was one of only five schools chosen for the honor. GCS is a lab-based program that targets students who are at risk of academic failure. All students who have failed at least one class on their most recent report card, and have parent permission, will be eligible to participate in the program. The lab will be equipped with state of the art technology, hands on manipulatives, and organizational resources, as well as other multi-sensory learning tools. Rebecca Huff, who will leave her 7th grade reading position to head up the GCS Lab, made the following statements about the new program. "Many students fail because they don't have the motivation or study skills necessary to succeed in the classroom. Our goal is to teach these students how to ‘do’ school. GCS will allow us to provide a safety net for the most academically at-risk students while using a systems approach for improving the overall academic achievement of all participating students.” Middle School Principal Ron Mays said, “Our staff is so excited about the changes taking place that we have 100% buy-in for the project. Mrs. Huff and the GCS Committee have earned the support of our superintendent, his staff, and the school board for the goal of the new project, producing leaders for tomorrow by ensuring the success of all students today.”
