TAKS Reading Strategy Steps for 4th and 5th Grades

Preview all stories, looking for most/least interesting stories.  Do least interesting stories first.  Work most interesting stories when you feel you are "loosing it", such as towards lunch or at the end of the day.  You do not have to do the stories in order!

1. Beginning     Highlight and read title;     123456789;     PIE

2. Middle          Outline shape of paragraphs;     highlight paragraph #s;     

                          highlight vocabulary words and/or phrases underlined;

                          highlight/circle and "read" pictures, graphs, etc.

3. End               Read question; highlight key words;     read all answer choices

4. Read a paragraph and summarize;     underline important info w/ pencil as you read   

                          summarize & underline to: 1) help answer ?s;    2) remember passage

5. Re-read entire passage
6. PIE (Author's purpose) Persuade - Inform - Entertain/Everything Else
7. Answer questions

8. Prove It!        Highlight proof;     P# by question;     Q# by proof in passage

9. Check that every problem has been answered and bubbled correctly;
